Obituary

Betty Fields Simmons passed away January 2, 2022, after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eula Mae Laughlin, father Joe Laughlin, her husband Claude D. Fields (1952) and husband S. Cecil Simmons (1972), and her son Paul D. Fields. She is survived by her daughters Cynthia Fields Powers, Amy Simmons Dowdy (Dennis) and son Gregory G. Simmons (Mary), 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and extended family David Simmons, June Marie Simmons Garavelli, Sam Simmons and Sharon Simmons.  She will also be missed by many co-workers, neighbors and friends.   She was a long-time member of Union Avenue Baptist church. "Miss Betty," as she was affectionately called, was a positive influence in the lives of hundreds of children and their families as a teacher at Union Avenue Baptist Child Enrichment Center from 1967 through 1997. Instead of flowers memorials may be sent to St. Jude, Wounded Warriors, or Memphis Humane Society. Visitation will be held at Forest Hill Midtown, Memphis. TN on Thursday, January 6, 1:00-2:00 p.m., followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. Family requests that guests wear a face mask.
