Betty Jean Smith, age 86, of Oakland, TN, died peacefully on October 22, 2024 in Memphis, TN.
She was born on November 6, 1937, in Gurdon, AR. Betty was the oldest of 2 children born to Tom Bowers Andrews and Helen Naomi Andrews. Following the death of her father, she, along with her mother and younger brother, Glenn, moved to North Little Rock, AR. Her mother was
remarried to Herman Vance, and they had Betty's youngest brother, Jerry. Betty met Sherman Smith on a blind date and 3 months later on September 19, 1958 they were married. They celebrated 45 years of marriage prior to Sherman's death in 2003. While living in North Little
Rock, they were blessed with three sons, Alan, Brian, and Keith. In 1969, they moved to Memphis, TN and in 2003, Sherman and Betty relocated to Oakland, TN.
Betty was a devoted follower of Christ, a loving wife and mother. She loved cooking and reading. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Ray Smith of Oakland, TN; her brother, Glenn Andrews and her son Alan Ray Smith of Oakland, TN. She is survived by her brother, Jerry Vance (Sumru) of Temecula, CA; sons, Brian Eugene Smith (Kim) of Mobile, AL; Keith Andrew
Smith (Becky) of Oakland, TN; and her daughter-in-law, Carole Ann Smith of Memphis, TN. She had 7 grandchildren; Melissa Ann Blossom (Daniel) of Forrest City, AR; Joshua Alan Smith of Forrest City, AR; Lindsey Nicole Smith of Memphis, TN; Brian Taylor Smith (Victoria) of Mobile,
AL; William Cargill Smith (Anna Marie) of Mobile, AL; Stephanie Michelle Stanfield (Nathan) of Bartlett, TN; and Rebekah Grace O'Hara (Cory) of Bartlett, TN; and 15 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are welcome to be made to The Muscular Dystrophy Association.
