Obituary

Billy J. Melton, 76, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic and the life he built through service to both his country and his community.

Billy proudly served in the United States Army, an experience that remained a source of pride throughout his life. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long career as a railroad engineer with Illinois Central Railroad, where he was respected for his hard work, reliability, and commitment to his profession.

When he wasn't working, Billy loved spending time outdoors. Hunting and fishing were among his greatest passions, and he treasured every opportunity to be outside enjoying nature. Those moments brought him great joy and created many lasting memories with family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Smith (Allen); his son, Jake Melton; his grandchildren, Dalton Parnell (Cheyanne), Jakob Knichel, Taelor Cambre (Thomas), and Kaylee Sawyer; his great-grandson, Asher Parnell; his sister, Minnie Melton Mayhall; and his brothers, Sidney Wayne Melton, Fred M. Melton and his wife, Brenda and James Abbott Melton. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Seaborn Wayne Melton; his mother, Ruby Case Melton; and his brother, Kenneth Ray Melton.
