Obituary

Bobbie Jean Jernigan McCarty entered into her eternal home on March 6, 2018. Bobbie was born on October 29, 1929 in Pontotoc, MS. She is survived by four daughters, Sharon Moss (Grant), Cindie Wrenne, Vickie Lindsay (Scott) and Suzanne McCarty; eight grandchildren, Gene Wrenne (Michelle), Ricky Walker (Mary), Jenny Hicks (Brandon), Carter Lindsay, Mandie Shelton (Joe), Karissa Meeks, Kyndall Smyre (Perry), and Sam McCarty; nine great-grandchildren, Bailey Wrenne, Rylan Radd, Jacob and Emma Walker, Jaxson and Callie Hicks, Mason Shelton, and Merek and Iva Smyre. She was preceded in death by her parents, Murray and Thelma Jernigan, and her son Robert.

Bobbie grew up in Pontotoc County, Mississippi and graduated from Pontotoc High School, after which she moved to Memphis and worked for WHBQ, along with Dewey Phillips and Wink Martindale. One of her favorite pastimes was attending dances hosted by Big Bands of the 40's and 50's, where she met her soon-to-be husband, James Walter McCarty. They were married in 1954 and she became mother to his five-year old daughter, Sharon. Soon afterward they had four more children. Bobbie was a stay-at-home mom until her divorce, at which time she re-entered the workforce. She retired from Woodson Bozeman in 1994.

A member of Leawood Baptist Church, Bobbie will be remembered by her friends and family for her fun sense of humor, her occasional biting commentaries on topics ranging from local and national politics to University of Memphis coaching, and an amazing determination to push through even during the toughest times. First and foremost she loved her family fiercely, always welcoming the additions of grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a prolific green thumb, was an avid reader, card player and crossword puzzle aficionado. A woman of faith, courage, strong opinions, and occasional stubbornness with a generous heart…she will be missed more than words could ever express.
