Bonnie Charlene Smith passed away at the age of 89 on June 4, 2023. She suffered a severe stroke in January 2023 and never fully recovered her speaking ability, although she enthusiastically attempted to interact with her family and loved ones her last few months. Charlene was born May 31, 1934 to Charles and Vivian Perkins – the 4th of five girls at Vardaman, Mississippi. She married the love of her life at age 14, Herbert, who affectionately called her Chasha and they enjoyed 66 happy years until he passed away in 2010. They had 4 children: Deborah Wright, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Marcia Isbell, of Collierville, Tennessee, Glenn Smith (with his wife, Brenda Smith) of Bartlett, Tennessee and Brian Smith surviving their parents except for Brian who passed away in 2009. Charlene is also survived by 9 grandchildren, (with the exception of her first grandson, Jamison Woods who predeceased her), 14 great grandchildren and a sister, Anne Morgan, of Memphis, Tn. Charlene earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in education and taught kindergarten for over 30 years. She loved little children and never was without some fun activity, prize or secret delight to share with them – especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her students knew her as Ms. Chasha and her "grandmother" name was just Chasha. Charlene loved old people, visiting nursing homes, shut-ins and particularly senior relatives; she was sacrificial in the attention and affection she showed them - taking them gifts and treats, bringing them joy and putting wide smiles on their faces. Anybody that knew Charlene also knew that she loved gardens, butterflies, hummingbirds and the color pink. She was active in church most of her life and was a dedicated, compassionate witness and counselor in her Christian faith. All who loved her rejoice that she now has rest and peace with her Lord Jesus Christ.
