Southaven - Burnard "Vernon" Lee Dial, 88, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital, DeSoto. Mr. Dial graduated from Memphis Catholic High School. He was an U.S. Army Veteran where he served in WWII and the Korean War. He remained in the TN National Guard and later transferring to the Army Engineer Battalion. He retired after 41 years from Bell South Telephone Co. Vernon was a Mid-South Golden Glove Boxing Champion. He operated the Memphis Boys Club at the fairgrounds for many years and also taught boxing. Vernon received numerous awards and plaques for his effort in teaching boys to box and good sportsmanship. He was in charge for a long time of Memphis Golden Gloves and was a member of the Memphis Park Commission Hall Of Fame. Vernon is survived by his wife, Mary Dial and son, Clay (Donna); grandchildren: Austin Mann (Kelly), Blake Dial (Amanda), Amber Clements, Shayne Clements and great-granddaughter, Victoria Mann; brothers, Franklin Dial (Janice) of Richmond, VA and Buddie Dial of Bartlett, TN; and one sister, Bernice Eley (David) of Cordova. Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 24 at Forest Hill South with visitation starting at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Edmondson Cemetery in Southaven, MS.
