Obituary

With humble acceptance of God's will, we announce the passing of Charles Wayne Bertling on February 8, 2022.  Born on April 18, 1944, and proud son of Edward and Fairy Bertling and youngest brother to Howard and Mickey.  Chuck grew up in Cape Giradeau, Mo where he loved spending time with his cousins. In 1961, his family moved to Memphis, TN and he attended to Whitehaven High School.

Once graduated from Whitehaven High School, he started working at a local clothing store where he would meet his future wife, Bonita Kay Gray, "Bunny".  Both loved to tell the story that they had their second date one year after their first date.  They both felt that this long stretch between their first and second date meant that they were meant to be together.  They would marry in November 24, 1966.

Chuck started his marketing career at Schering-Plough and worked extremely hard for 38 years.  He advanced to become media director at Chandler Ehrlich.

Chuck's real joy was family, golf and coaching.  He coached both boys and girls for 30 years in several different sports. You knew what time of the year it was based on what sport Chuck was coaching.  He coached boys' basketball as well as track and field at St. Dominic School and absolutely loved coaching today's youth.

His family always took Chuck's top priority.   He loved the annual family reunion in Jackson, MO where he could see all his cousins.  While at the reunion, Chuck would take his daughter and grandchildren around Cape Giradeau to show the family history.  Even though the stories were always the same, one could hear the pride in his voice when he went to all the significant locations in Cape Giradeau that represented the Bertling heritage.

If Chuck was not coaching and not with family, you could find him at a golf course with his buddies.  At heart he was always competitive and would not pass up a chance to go a round and be the winner of the group.  It gave him a week of bragging rights and be able to hold the group trophy until the next time they played.

Chuck was a great man that left his touch on everyone he met.  He was an amazing husband that adored his wife.  He is a terrific dad and great Poppa.  He is survived by his daughter; Heather Bertling Wilson, two grandchildren; Trey and Anya Wilson, countless friends, cousins and athletes that he coached through the years.
