Charles Joseph Mazzone, 76, went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 7, 2018
, after a long battle with cancer
. Born in Memphis to the late Clemente and Theresa Mazzone, Charlie was a 1962 graduate of
Kingsbury High School, where he
lettered in
football, baseball, and basketball.
Following graduation, he joined the Air Force where he
played on the championship footb
all and baseball teams
at
Rhein-M
ain Air Force Base in Germany.
He graduate
d from
the University of Memphis and began teaching there for over 40 years, where he coached the university's handball team
to 8
consecutive national championships.
He received the Silver "M" Award from the University of Memphis "M" Club and was a member of the
Memphis
Amateur Sports Hall of Fame.
He was a
long-time
member of First Evangelical Church
, where he served as a deacon.
Along with his parents, he was
preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Mazzone, and his sister, Delores Leffew. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sally Smith Mazzone; a son, Mark
Mazzone (Heather); a daughter, Holly Mazzone Grace (Mason); and three grandchildren, Liza Grace, Mason Grace, and Malachi Mazzone.
The visitation will be
Tuesday, September 11, from 12:00-2:00 p.m., with a Funeral Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at First Evangelical Church, 735 Ridge Lake Blvd. in Memphis, TN. Memorial
