Obituary

David Daniel Smith, 84, a man of great character, wisdom and integrity, passed into the arms of our Savior and Lord on Sunday, November 11th, 2018.  He lived to serve God and make HIM known.  He loved his family and friends, and enjoyed spending every minute he could with his three grandchildren.

David was the first-born to Hazel and Hardin Smith on May 5th, 1934 in Decaturville, TN.  He grew up on a farm, and quickly spent countless hours in the field with his dad.  David graduated from Parsons High School in 1952 and attended The University of Memphis.  He joined the Army in 1953 and served his country in Germany after being promoted to "Sergeant".  The best part of his life was patiently waiting to come back home to "Patty Jane".  They were married in 1957, and he always told us that other than his decision to follow Christ she was the best decision he ever made.  He worked at Memphis Light Gas & Water and quickly learned a trade he enjoyed.  He retired from MLG&W at the age of 50 and began full-time ministry. David was preceded in death by his brothers, Harvey Smith, Gid Smith and son-in-law, Jimmy Brooks Brownlee.  He is survived by his sister, Gail Smith Arrington of Decaturville, TN and brother, Larry Smith of South Carolina.  He is also survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Patty Jane Smith; daughter, Penny Smith Nicar of Collierville TN; granddaughter, Abigail Nicar (father Dave Nicar); daughter Cristy Smith Brownlee; and grandchildren, Isabella Grace Brownlee and Benjamin Brooks Brownlee of Red Banks, Mississippi. The family will receive friends at Cornerstone Community Church, 2385 Whitten Road, Memphis, TN on November 14th, 2018, with visitation at 11:00 a.m. and funeral services to begin at 12:00 p.m.  Interment will immediately follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, TN.  The family requests that all memorials be sent to ST. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Cornerstone Community Church.
