Dewey Clifton Haynes, age 88, was born in Memphis, TN on July 4, 1923, the first child of Pauline and Mark Haynes. He passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Dewey is survived by his wife of 65 years, Florence Sanders Haynes; daughters Dr. Paula Haynes (Dr. Greg Grant), Rena Haynes (David Harris); sons Mark Haynes (Faith Haynes), and John Haynes (Cynthia Haynes), nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He graduated from Memphis Technical High School in 1941. He was awarded the Effie E. Wright Mathematics medal, one of the most coveted honors at Tech. Dewey enlisted in the Navy on January 20, 1943 when he was 19 years old, and was Honorably Discharge on January 8, 1946. He served on the USS Portland, a heavy cruiser, in the Pacific during WW II. He received an American Theatre Medal; Asiatic Pacific Medal (3 stars); Philippine Liberation Medal (2 stars); and the Victory Medal. After his military service Dewey attended Mississippi State University in Starkville and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering on May 17, 1948. He was a declared and certified a member of the Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering fraternity in 1960. Dewey retired in 1984 after a 33 year career at Buckeye Cellulose, a division of Proctor & Gamble Corp. During his career he won several awards from the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry for his research and development in water supply and treatment. He was Deacon at the Raleigh Church of Christ. He coached Little League baseball for 17 years. He and Florence moved to Starkville, MS after his retirement. He was an avid MSU Bulldog fan and member of the Bulldog Booster's Club. Dewey was also a member of the Starkville Lion's Club and served on the Municipal Water Board. He moved back to Memphis to be closer to family in 2006. Dewey was a member of the American Rose Society and won many awards for his roses. Dewey was a member of the Bartlett Woods Church of Christ. Visitation will be Thursday, March 22 from 5-7 p.m. at Forest Hill East, 2440 Whitten Road, Memphis, TN. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Forest Hill East.
