Obituary

Donald Ray South, 83 passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 3:30 am under Crossroads hospice care at Kirby Pines LifeCare Community in Memphis, Tennessee.

He was born September 15, 1937 in Paden, Mississippi, graduated high school in 1955 and attended State Technical Institute in Memphis.  Don and Mary Louise (Cagle) were married on May 19. 1956 in Iuka, Mississippi and moved to Memphis.  He worked at Sears & Roebuck for thirty-one years, then Jordan Window Company for fifteen years.  He was also a contract truck driver for Jordan after retirement for an additional thirteen years.  He served in the Army Reserves and Air National Guard and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.  He earned the rating of Expert Sharpshooter during his service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Albert South and Ravill (Mock) South.  He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years Mary Louise and children Donald Kevin South (Brenda) and Kristi Hicks (Mark) along with his siblings Dwight South (Peggy) and Linda Johns (Roger, deceased).  Don also leaves behind four grandchildren: Tia Blansett (Luke), Alexa Windland (James), Austin Hicks, and Tyler Hicks (Lacey).  He was blessed with two great granddaughters, Betty Claire Windland and Olivia Adeline Blansett.

He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as fishing, traveling, Bluegrass music, westerns, and working in the yard. He had a strong faith and served as a Deacon at Berclair church of Christ and attended Macon Road church of Christ and Germantown church of Christ where he had many close friends.

There will be a memorial service Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Germantown church of Christ, 8723 Poplar Pike, Germantown, Tennessee.  Visitation will begin at 1 pm with service to follow at 2 pm.

Any donations in his memory should be sent to Germantown church of Christ or Parkinson's Foundation.
