Obituary

Dorothy Aileen Davenport Perkins, 92, entered into eternal rest in the company of her devoted family on March 6, 2012 at Lexington Medical Center in Columbia, SC. Mrs. Perkins was born December 29,1919 in Birmingham, AL, she was the only daughter of Victor Frederick Davenport and Ida Graham Davenport. After growing up in Corinth, MS, her education took her to Memphis, TN, where she graduated Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. Mrs. Perkins was married on July 7, 1940 to the late Sidney Thomas Perkins in Memphis. Survived by four loving children, Dorothy Anne Perkins Crook of Columbia, SC (Clyde D. Crook); Sidney Thomas Perkins, Jr. of Bedford, TX (Susan Hubbard Perkins); Victor Edward Perkins of West Sussex, UK (Ian D. Hughes); John Frederick Perkins of Cordova, TN. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, Ginger Hilbun Cook, Diane Scott Perkins, and her half-sister, Mary Sue Perry. Dorothy had a tremendous capacity for taking care of those in need and expressing deep compassion throughout her lifetime, which lead her to a career as a registered nurse, a volunteer for the Red Cross and an active, life long member of the Presbyterian Church. She retired as an Intensive Care Coronary Nurse with the University of TN Medical Hospital in Memphis. She was sharp to the end, keeping everyone around her laughing, staying deeply involved with the Young and the Restless, playing computer solitaire and knocking out a few trees with her word search books. In her retirement she also expressed a deep compassion and love for the slot machines in Tunica, MS or "Tuna Vegas" as she liked to call it, and enjoyed receiving one scratch card for every candle on her birthday cake. The family will receive friends on Tuesday March 13, 2012 from 12-2 p.m. at Forest Hill East Funeral Home, 2440 Whitten Rd, Memphis, with service and burial to follow at 2 p.m. A memorial may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
