Captain Tom Cobb, age 93, of Bartlett, Tennessee passed away at his home on October 3, 2022.
He was born to the late Eulton and Velma Cobb on March 26, 1929, in New Albany, Mississippi. Tom joined the Navy in 1947 and served honorably until 1967. In 1956, he became the first man to go through the Shelby County Sheriff's reserve class while still serving in the Navy; thus, when he retired in 1967 after 20 years in the Navy, he had already embarked on what became a 32-year career with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.
In 1979, Tom took the F.B.I. course at Quantico, Virginia, and qualified for the Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) Division. His duties included commanding a 15-man team as well as serving as Patrol Field Commander. On August 8, 1983, Tom was promoted to Captain in the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.
Captain Cobb was a member of First Assembly Memphis in Cordova, Tennessee serving in a variety of roles alongside his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Kathy Cobb. He enjoyed supporting numerous ministries along with playing golf, watching sports and westerns on TV.
Captain Cobb is preceded in death by his sister, Melba Evans. He is survived by his two brothers, Steve Cobb, Tommy Cobb, his wife, Kathy Cobb, his four children, Steve Cobb (Susie) of Plymouth, Minnesota, Tim Cobb (Rhonda) of Bartlett, Tennessee, Kim Stevens (Al) of Bartlett, Tennessee, Debbie Poland of Depoe Bay, Oregon, his six grandchildren, Jacob Cobb, Grant Cobb, Katie Cobb, Morgan O'Brien (Drew), Nolan Stevens (Presley), and Connor Stevens. He is also survived by his two great-grandchildren, Waylon O'Brien, and Colt Stevens.
Visitation for Captain Cobb will take place at First Assembly Memphis, 8650 Walnut Grove Rd. Cordova, Tennessee 38018, on Monday, October 10 at 10:00am with funeral service beginning at 11:00am. Graveside service will immediately follow at Forest Hill-East Funeral Home, 2440 Whitten Rd, Memphis, Tennessee 38133.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Kathy Cobb prefers those who wish to express sympathy to consider giving in honor of her husband to First Assembly Memphis (address above), so that your contribution can be used to bless the numerous ministries that Captain Cobb's contributions did for so many years.
