Obituary

Ethelene Wakefield Brewer, 95, passed from this world on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 2:38 in the afternoon at North Mississippi Medical Center in Iuka, MS.  She was born in Cullman, AL at home on March 30, 1927 to Charlie Marion Bovell Wakefield and Grace Truman Whatley Wakefield.  Ethelene was the third oldest in her family of 5 girls and 5 boys.  She is survived by her children, Carol(Don) Berryman of Iuka, MS; her son Wendell (Kathy) Brewer of Eads, TN; her sister, Sara Virginia Arnett and her sister Cecile(James) Reed of Walls, MS; 4 grandchildren-Angela Barnes, Wendell Brewer, Jr., David Arnold and Mindy Eppich; 2 step grandchildren- Chris Berryman and Kristy Counce; 12 great grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren; several cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.  She was preceded in death by her brothers, Carl Gene Wakefield, Billy Wakefield, Robert Wakefield, Roy Wakefield; her sisters, Loraine parks and Louise Woods.  Ethelene loved life, her family and was up for attempting just about anything.  She lived in Alabama, Oklahoma, California and Tennessee.  Lived through the Great Depression, survived the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma and as a young child worked alongside her parents in the fields digging potatoes, picking fruits & cotton.  Her parents were sharecroppers.  She lived through 17 Presidents of the United States, World War ii, astronauts going to the moon, air conditioning being invented, dial phones become cell phones, the age of email, the internet and machines that talk to you. She worked at factories in Memphis for over 7 years and decided to go to school for Surgical Technology Nursing.  When she graduated, she became employed at a job at Methodist Hospital Center and worked there for 27 years, then went on to work at Memphis Surgery Center for 17 years until the age of 77 years old.  She learned to type in school, but in later years, bought herself another typewriter and relearned typing after the age of 50.  She even took a flower arranging course and loved having her fresh flower arrangements.  She loved to crochet until, as she called it "Arthur" took over and her fingers, would no longer let her do it.  She loved fig newtons, milk shakes and fish.  She enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, going to Disney Land and Disney World.  Had visited almost all the states in the U.S, has been to Tijuana, Mexico, Bahamas and to Canada.  She loved dancing concerts, met Lawrence Welk and saw Elvis on many occasion along with many country stars.  She loved opera music especially  Luciano Pavarotti.  She has seen Broadway Shows, been to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.  Conway was her man!  She has ridden the bull at Gilley's in Texas with her brother, Roy; ridden a motorcycle and water skied with her cousin, Jess, ridden a wave runner with her grandson, David and, has been white water rafting in a canoe down a river in Arkansas.  She loved Margaritas and going "Down South" especially with her sisters, Cecile and Virginia.  She loved to tell the story of winning her "little red truck" at Tunica.
