Obituary

Garry Lee Hallum, 66, of Bartlett, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Saturday, October 2, 2021, after unexpected pneumonia complications and heart failure.

On July 19, 1955, Garry Lee was born in Dyersburg, TN, to James Albert and Mae Butler Hallum. The Hallum family relocated to Memphis in 1956. After graduating from Treadwell High School in 1973, he landed his first job at Bluff City News (Anderson News), where he worked as a Supervisor for 28 years. His last place of employment was as a Dangerous Goods Agent at FedEx. Garry treasured many of the personal relationships he shared with his co-workers over the years.
In December of 1991, he married the love of his life, Rita Carol. Though they never had children of their own, he was an amazing uncle to lots and lots of children and a loving daddy to Katie, Gracie, and Chloe (their kitties), in addition to the many strays he helped feed.
One of the highlights each year for Garry Lee was to spend time at deer camp with his brothers, nephews, and friends. He loved to travel, never met a stranger, and brought sunshine, love, and laughter everywhere he went. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and, most of all, cooking. With food being his love language, he took great pride in preparing and sharing delicious and attractive dishes.
As a teenager, Garry gave his life to Christ. He loved the Lord and his church families at Hartland Baptist (1956-2015) and Calvary Baptist in Bartlett (2015-2021). He enriched many lives as a sweet son, a fun and loyal brother, a super fun uncle, a trusted friend, a valued co-worker, and a devoted husband.
Garry Lee is preceded in death by his parents, James and Mae, and survived by his wife, Rita Carol, his brothers Richard Hallum (Debi) and Wayne Hallum of Cordova, TN, and his sister Patricia Ann Riggs (Kenny) of Horn Lake, MS. Also left to treasure his memory are his three brothers-in-law, Robert, Randy, and Ron, of Memphis, and a host of special nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.
In light of the last 16 days of Garry Lee's life, and how he was sustained by a ventilator, we pray that each person will document for their loved ones their wishes concerning a living will, organ donation, and a medical and durable POA (power of attorney). Most importantly, we pray Jesus lives in your heart so that, like Garry Lee, your saved loved ones have the assurance of seeing you again one day in heaven. John 14:6.
On Saturday, October 9, 2021 , we will gather to celebrate Garry Lee's life with visitation from 12:00 to 2:00 pm , followed by the funeral at 2:00 pm . All at Forest Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park East, 2440 Whitten Rd, Memphis, TN, 38133, with Pastors, Jackie Kay and Reginald Leach officiating.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
