George J Schweizer, Jr., 96, born on August 28, 1918, George J. Schweizer, Sr. and Nesta Sims Schweizer in Greenville, MS, transitioned to his heavenly home on June 30. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Martha Johnston Schweizer, his sons, Dan (Britta) of Bartlett, TN, Jay (Ronnee), of Blue Springs, MO, and Malcolm Mark (Amy) of St. Thomas, USVI, his cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Luke and Tim Schweizer of Blue Springs, MO, Allison Schweizer of Bartlett, TN and Petra Schweizer of St. Thomas, and nieces, Karen Schweizer-Nagle of Greenville, SC and Laura Schweizer Holderfield of Bowling Green, KY. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward Rae Schweizer and his infant grandson, Nathan Daniel Schweizer. George received law degrees from Cumberland University and University of MS and was admitted to the Mississippi Bar at the age of 21, at that time the youngest member ever admitted to practice in Mississippi. He maintained his law practice for over 50 years in Memphis and in Greenville, Jackson and Columbus, MS. His career as an attorney was interrupted in 1942, when he enlisted in the Army Air Force. After his training he flew over 50 missions as a lead bombardier/navigator over Germany and was awarded the Air Medal of Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery. After WWII he continued his career in the Air Force as a Judge Advocate stationed in England until his retirement in 1956, having attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was very active in United Cerebral Palsy in MS and served as State President of that organization. In 1970 - 1973 he served two terms as National President of United Cerebral Palsy and was presented the Roger S. Firestone Award in recognition of his humanitarian concern for those with cerebral palsy. George was a Bible scholar and enjoyed sharing his knowledge as a Sunday school teacher and in prison ministry. He led Bible study classes at the Shelby County Penal Farm for 26 years. Many of his former students kept in touch with him after their release form prison to thank him for helping them to begin a new life on the outside of prison because they had been changed on the inside through the Bible study classes. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 2 and a Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 3 at Forest Hill East Funeral Home with interment following. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Bibles For the World, P.O. Box 49759, Colorado Springs, CO, 80949 or to the Prison Ministry Fund at Hope Presbyterian Church where he was a member.
