Gwen Thomas Stuart was born on May 4, 1946 and passed away at 6:35 a.m. on October 7, 2018. Gwen grew up in southeast Shelby County, Tennessee in the Capleville area, attending Capleville and Oakhaven Schools. Her parents were Elbert and Florence Thomas, and she had two brothers, Allen and Larry, and one sister, Brenda. After school, Gwen worked for John Gerber Company (one of America's fine stores) on Main Street in  Memphis as a model and helped out in the tea room. Gwen met John Stuart during the early summer of 1962 when he was running for the State House of Representatives. They campaigned together most days that summer and married October 10, 1962. Gwen was talented when it came to working with young children over the years. She worked for Union Avenue Baptist, Idlewild Presbyterian, and McLean Baptist Churches, always working with children. Gwen volunteered her services at Trinity United Methodist Church in the children's department. She was a member of Trinity UMC for 33 years. Gwen and John have three sons, William, Wesley, and Robert Stuart, and two grandchildren, Amber Stuart and Christopher Stuart. Gwen had lived on Crump Cove in Midtown Memphis since February 9, 1965, or 53 years, longer than any other resident. In recent years, Gwen fought Stage 4 cancer and won! Thanks be to God for the miracle! Gwen Stuart's funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2018, in the Sanctuary Building of Trinity United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Craig Jordan will officiate. Memorials may be sent to Trinity UMC, 1738 Galloway Ave., Memphis, TN 38112 in lieu of flowers.
