HELEN VIRGINIA FRIEND MILLS, 87, of Germantown, died on March 4, 2012 at the Baptist Trinity Hospice Home in Collierville. She was born in Memphis and moved to Jonesboro, AR during her younger years. After returning to Memphis, she attended Tech High School then met Howard Stanley Mills. After only a three week courtship, they married and entered their 70th year of marriage on November 27, 2011. Their honeymoon night was spent at the Peabody Hotel with a total bill of $6.00. They were never apart except for the three years Howard spent in the army during World War II with some of that time in the battlefields of Europe, going in on Normandy and marching all the way to Germany. Helen wrote a letter to him every day while he was away - totaling over 1000 letters. While Howard was away in the Army, Diane was born, and he did not see her for the first 2 years of her life. Helen worked during that time and saved enough money to buy their first home when he returned from the war. After their children were older she began a career as a dental assistant for Dr. Eugene Finley. She was a member of the Raleigh Seventh-Day Adventist Church for 60 years. Helen's contagious smile and loving ways will always be cherished and missed by everyone that knew her. Helen is survived by her husband, Howard Mills; her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bernie Schneider of Houston, TX; her son, Stanley Mills of Germantown and her son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Terry Mills of Collierville. She also leaves two granddaughters, Suzy Mills Keller of Lakeland and Judy Mills Golden of Memphis, four great-grandchildren, a multitude of friends and relatives.
