Obituary

James (Jim) Marvin Evans, Sr. October 8, 1942 – July 26, 2024   Jim was born to Marvin Ollie and Irene Baskin Evans at home on October 8, 1942, in Dyersburg, Tennessee. He was considered a 'caboose' child seeing that he had two older sisterswho were already married, with one of them expecting a child at the same time. Jim leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Katherine (Katy) Brankstone Evans, his children: Cynthia Evans Lewis (Jim), James M. Evans, Jr. (Stephanie), and Jeffery Alan Evans (Britney); grandchildren: Brianna Lewis Bramlet (Bryson), Ian Evans, Levi Evans, and Alexa Lewis; granddogs: Perry, 'little' Zoey, and 'big' Zoey; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Irene Evans and his sisters Murmon Hill (Cecil) and Lula Mai Simpson (William). Jim grew up in the Millington/Woodstock area of northern Shelby County Tennessee. He graduated from Millington Central High School. As a young teenager he sold newspapers 5 days a week after school at the Millington Navy Base and picked cotton at harvest time (made a penny a paper and a penny a pound of cotton). In high school he started working at Angelo's Food Basket in Frayser where he worked and then managed for 30 years (also where he met Katy who lived just down the street from the store…and who almost destroyed his car's transmission on their first 'date' when he was trying to teach her to drive a stick shift so she could pass her driving test). After which he worked at Morgan Thornburg Mechanical Contractors for 18 years overseeing delivery of supplies. In his retirement years he was a dedicated volunteer taking multiple groups of homeless and needy neighbors every other week to the DMV to assist them in obtaining their state photo IDs and he also handed out bologna and cheese sandwiches every week to the needy downtown. Jim was an avid Memphis State University turned University of Memphis fan, Tiger true blue. He was a Tiger's football season ticket holder for many years (and loved to sit above the nosebleed section in the shade of the press box) and went to multiple Bowl games. He and Katy enjoyed traveling in their retirement years and took multiple group bus tours around the US, cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean, and tours to Hawaii and the United Kingdom. He was a faithful member of multiple churches throughout his life including: Frayser Presbyterian (later Frayser-Trinity Presbyterian), Highland Heights Presbyterian, and Cordova Presbyterian. Jim was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and an all-aroundoutstanding human being whose essence will continue to live on in those of us who were blessed to know and love him. Services for Jim will be on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Visitation will be from 11am to 1pm with a Service of Remembrance and Celebration at 1pm. The Visitation and Service will both take place at Cordova Presbyterian Church located at 1071 North Sanga Road, Cordova, Tennessee 38018. As an alternate to flowers, the family would suggest memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Cordova Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park East located at 2440 Whitten Road, Memphis, Tennessee. The women of Cordova Presbyterian will host a reception at the church after the Interment.
