Obituary

James L. Smith passed away on December 7th at the young age of 92 years old. James was preceded in death by the love of his life, Josephine Smith, his grandson, Joshua Smith and brother Big Norman Smith whom he loved dearly. He is survived by brother David Smith (Lala) and Ernestine Baker (Jim). James and Josephine had three children, James Lee Smith (Belinda), Pam Riddle(Tim), and Norman Smith(Cathy). Most of the time he was not called James at all, he was known affectionately as Papaw to his nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. James was a man loved by all who ever met him. His jovial and easygoing manner put everyone at ease. He worked hard all of his life, most of the time as the only independent bread distributor in the city of Memphis. His admirable work ethic carried through to his final years, where he worked at his daughter and son-in-law's business at Clark Tower. James will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. The world could use more people like him. He never complained, always had a great attitude about life, and a deep love for everyone. He was a true American hero, who in his last days said "tomorrow can always be a better day". In honor of James, let's all remember his words in these trying times.
