Jane Marie Spencer, age 89, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Jane was born to the late Walter and Augusta Escue on March 12, 1925 in Brownsville, TN. She graduated from Brownsville High School in 1943, and married her only love and best friend, Curtis Leroy Spencer, in 1945. Jane and Roy were residents of Memphis, TN for most of their 58 years together. In 2003, Jane moved to Birmingham, Alabama to be with family. Jane was known and loved by many, and was affectionately called "Nana" or "Aunt Jane" by most. She was an incredibly kind woman, and she never met a stranger. She often made new friends on an elevator. She loved to be surrounded by family and friends, and she spent many hours playing with matchbox cars, trains and playing basketball with her great-grandchildren. She really enjoyed playing games, cards and dominoes. Jane loved to bake, and was known for giving out recipes without one of the main ingredients. She amazed her doctors year after year, as she battled severe rheumatoid arthritis, but remained very active. In recent years, Jane vacationed with her family in Seattle, Washington and in Disney World. She was an avid dog-lover, and is survived by her dog, Happy. Jane is survived by her daughter, Linda Spencer Everson (Tillman); her son, Curt Spencer (Kathy); her grandchildren, Sherry Taylor (Bob), Mandy Mitchell (Brian), Eric Everson (Karen), Brad Spencer (Karie) and Jordan Spencer (Jessica); and six great-grandkids who adored her. Funeral arrangements are being made by Forest Hill East (Whitten Road). Visitation is 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2. Jane supported many charities that were close to her heart. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Marvins Chapel Cemetery Fund, c/o Flora Escue, 4642 Highway 76 South, Brownsville, Tennessee 38012, or to a charity that is close to your own heart. In honor of the kindness that Jane showed to everyone around her, a random act of kindness would also be a wonderful memorial donation.
