Janie "Maxine" Gholston Avent, 90 of Memphis, passed away on Wednesday December 26, 2012 at Saint Francis Hospital. Maxine was born on November 20, 1922 in Potts Camp, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Della Reed and Bedford Forrest Gholston. She was preceded in death by her husband William Avent and two brothers, Sonny Gholston and Billy Gholston. Surviving is her daughter Debbie Avent of Collierville, Tennessee, her sisters Elizabeth Hunsucker and Joann Cox, both of Memphis, and her sisters-in-law, Joyce Gholston of Jackson, Mississippi and Betty Gholston of Tishomingo, Mississippi. Maxine will be greatly missed by a host of relatives and friends, including her many nieces and nephews. Maxine graduated from Potts Camp High School in 1941, where she was an avid basketball player. She married Bill Avent and they moved to Memphis, where she was a homemaker and also worked at JC Penny until the time of her retirement. Maxine loved to cook and work in her garden. She was a very kind, giving person, who was quick to make friends and keep them forever. Maxine was a member of Potts Camp Methodist Church. She attended Beverly Hills Baptist Church and later Cherokee Baptist Church in Memphis for many years. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m., with a funeral service starting at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday December 29 at Forrest Hill East Funeral Home, 2440 Whitten Road, Memphis.
