Obituary

Jimmy "Jim" Ray Ayers, age 80, passed away on September 17, 2018 in Memphis, TN surrounded by his family. Born June 22, 1938, Jim was the son of Mary Lou (Isom) and Ira J.  Ayers. He is survived by his brother, Kenneth Ayers, his wife, Nell and their daughter, Stacey Renzelman; son, Lawrence (Larry) Ayers; daughter, Renée Appleman; four grandchildren, Caitlin White, Lauryn Ayers, Alan Ayers, and Cody White; nephew, Bradley Brunson and niece, Brooke Melton and nephew, Ronnie Ayers. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Brunson Ayers, his brother Ronnie O. Ayers, and his son, Terrance (Terry) Ayers. Jim was born in Hamilton, Alabama, where he grew up among his large extended family. Previously a MATA bus driver, Jim retired as an Operating Engineer in the construction industry. He and his wife owned and operated King's Den Hair Salon in Memphis. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served three years during peacetime. Jim was an animal lover, especially dogs. He did not know how to swim but could teach anyone to water ski. He loved to drive the boat. In his retirement, he enjoyed cutting grass and spending time with friends and neighbors in Whiteville, TN. Always generous and hospitable, Jim never met a stranger. His heart and home were always open. He loved his family dearly and took particular pride in being a grandfather. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 20, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Forest Hill East, 2440 Whitten Rd, Memphis, TN 38133. Funeral service will be Friday, September 21, at 10:00 am at Forest Hill East. Burial will be held at Forest Hill South, 2545 E Holmes Rd, Memphis, TN 38118 following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Methodist Hospice Residence at 6416 Quince Rd, Memphis, TN 38119.
