Obituary

J.L. Browning, 91 years old, born December 14th, 1933, of Memphis, TN, went home to the Lord on March 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his family. He was the 5th born out of 9 children to Charles Madison and Jewel Lorraine Browning, on a family farm in McCrory, Arkansas, where he learned the values of dedication and perseverance that shaped his entire life. From a young age, he worked alongside his family, breaking horses and mending the farm, instilling in him a deep love for the land and a strong work ethic that never faded. He is survived by one brother, Larry "Bill" Browning of Quitman, Mississippi.

As a young man, J.L. began a respected career at the Illinois Central Railroad. During his time at the railroad, he selflessly joined the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, sending money home to support his parents and siblings and defending his country – following his father's footsteps. After his service, he continued to build his career and was peer elected as the ICG Railroad Union Chairman for over 20 years, known for his integrity and tireless efforts to continuously help others.

A man of many passions, J.L. was a dedicated referee in multiple sports, an avid fisherman, and a talented guitar player. He found joy in the simple things—watching westerns, playing music, and sharing stories with loved ones. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was a proud member of Greenbrook Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi.

Preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Browning, J.L. was the devoted father to his children - Keith, Denise & Royce Browning. He was a cherished grandfather to five and a proud great-grandfather to seven, showering each with unconditional love and support.

Known for his kindness, gentle nature, humor, wit, and stubborn determination, J.L. loved his family fiercely. He lived a life of purpose, always putting others before himself and leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, strength, and compassion will live on through his family and the many lives he touched.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 28th, at 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Forest Hill Funeral Home - Midtown, Memphis, TN. A committal service will take place immediately following at 3pm. Family and friends are invited to gather afterward at Greenbrook Baptist Church in Southaven, MS, to celebrate his life.
