Obituary

Jo Melton Vickers, 86, of Memphis, TN, peacefully passed away on July 27, 2024, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Jo was born on July 5,1938 to James and Bettye Melton. She graduated from Messick High School in 1956. After graduation, she began her career at J.I. Case Company.

On April 6,1962 she married Herman McCall Vickers and had two children, Vicki Vickers Halsted and James McCall Vickers.

Jo and Herman founded Vickers Distribution and Transfer in 1964. They dedicated their lives to building & operating the company, always considering employees part of their family. Jo continued to operate the company following Herman's death until they ceased operations in 2016.

She loved Ole Miss football, whether listening on AM radio, watching on TV, or attending games in Oxford. She loved spending time in The Grove with family and friends. She enjoyed soccer and was a girls soccer coach. She found great pleasure working in her yard, planting colorful flowers and fragrant bushes. She was a true social butterfly and could entertain a group with her stories and joke telling. She was a frequent Carnival Cruise guest, often traveling with her sister Judy and other friends. She loved her fur babies, each one spoiled and overindulged with coffee, beer, fast food hamburgers or anything else she thought they would enjoy.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; son, Mac; parents JE & Bettye Melton, and sister Judy Wingate. She is survived by her daughter Vicki Halsted (Rick), her grandchildren; Chelsea Bailey Wilson (Brandon), Ariel Bailey Smith (Brock); Olivia Bailey Merrill (Jacob); Caroline Reese Vickers; Mary Taylor Vickers; Rylee Halsted; Cody Halsted; Nikki Halsted; her great grandchildren: Mason Wayne Wilson; Piper Rene' Wilson and very soon to be McCall David Merrill; a niece Lauren Wingate and brother-in-law Scott Wingate. She also leaves her beloved dog Maggie Mae.

A celebration of life reception will be held on Wednesday, August 7 at Memphis Botanical Gardens from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Humane Society or Animal Shelter of their choice.
