Obituary

It is with heavy hearts, but loving memories, the family announces the passing of our beloved mom, grandmother and great grandmother, Joann Elaine Gyetvay on January 24, 2022.  Joann was 86 years old.

Joann is survived by her 3 daughters, Janice McCallen, Jeanne Burnet (and close friend Rev. Dr. Jeff Wilson), Judy Chapman (Clark), three grandchildren, John Thomas (J.T.) McCallen (Carol), Kyle Chapman (Sara), and Makenzie Chapman (and fiancé Hunter Sexton), 5 great grandchildren, William Thomas (Will) McCallen, Christopher John (C.J.) McCallen, Kaitlyn Chapman, Westin Chapman and Brinley Chapman, her sister, Charlene Hansen of Horton, KS and a host of nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 64 years, John, and her sons-in-law, Tom Burnet and Bill McCallen.

Joann was born on March 18, 1935 in Bern, KS.  She graduated from Horton High School in Horton, Kansas and Stormont Vail Nursing School in Topeka, Kansas.  Joann was a nurse for several years before pausing to raise a family.  She returned to nursing and worked another 25 years retiring in 2000 from Methodist Hospital South in Memphis.

Joann continued to have a heart for patient care and served as a volunteer with Methodist Health Systems for many years following retirement.  Joann was also very involved in her home church, Longstreet United Methodist, where she was a member for 49 years and served on numerous committees.

Joann's love of nursing was matched by her love of sewing.  She was a master seamstress constructing most of the clothing her daughters wore during their childhood along with sport jackets for John.  Some of her most cherished work was the wedding gowns she handmade for her daughters.

Joann enjoyed cruising the world with John and several close friends.  They sailed around the world several times, with a couple of the cruises lasting 60 days or more.  Some of their favorite days were spent relaxing on the ship in the middle of the ocean.

A funeral service to honor Joann's life will be held Friday, January 28, 2022 at Forest Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park East, 2440 Whitten Rd., Memphis, TN 38133.  Visitation will be at 9:00 AM, with the service to follow at 10:00 AM.  Burial will be at Forest Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park South, 2545 E Holmes Rd, Memphis, TN 38118 following the service.  Masks are required, due to current COVID-19 protocols.

The family requests that any memorials be sent to Golden Cross Senior Ministries, 1615 Appling Rd, Cordova, TN 38016.
