John Clay Phillips Jr. known to everyone in Memphis as “Lefty” passed peacefully on 08/26/26 at home surrounded by family and loved ones. He was 75 years old
Born on 05/29/51 in Osceola, AR Lefty was a beloved father, Paw, and friend of many. He spent his life as a brick mason for over 40 years. He was proud of the work he accomplished and would point out the buildings throughout Memphis that he helped build. In recent years he enjoyed buying and selling used golf clubs. He was passionate about making good deals and could tell you everything there was to know about most clubs.
Lefty was known for his kindness, humor, generosity, and love of family. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life spending time on the golf course, browsing thrift shops, and delighting in any bargain he could uncover.
Lefty is survived by his sister Patsy(Pert) Whitehead of Tunica, MS, his children John Clay III(Heather) Phillips of Somerville, TN, Gina Phillips of Whiteville, TN, Lindsay Johnson of Star City, AR, and Jeremy Phillips of Memphis, TN. Four grandchildren Sean, Kyle, Ellie, and Nathan. He is also survived by his dear friend of 75 years, Ronnie Burch, who was more like a brother.
He was preceded in death by his father JC Phillips and mother Mildred Phillips.
A celebration of life will be held on 09/13/26 at Olive Branch Country Club from 3:00 pm till. We will be hosting a Memorial round of golf in honor of Lefty for those that would like to join us please contact Clay Phillips.
Lefty will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
