Obituary

John Clement Redden, of Memphis, TN was 85 years old when he passed from this life on June 9, 2012. To be accurate, Jack was 85 years and one day, because for him every day was a gift to be enjoyed and appreciated. John Clement Redden was born June 8, 1927 in Ruthven, IA to Clement Leo Redden and Marjorie Mosher Redden. Following two years of service in the U.S. Navy Reserve (1945-46), he graduated from Drake University in 1950 and soon after began his career in the cemetery/mortuary industry. After receiving a Master's degree from Harding Graduate School of Religion in 1978, Jack became a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Jack is survived by his wife, Carol Wade Redden, daughter, Judy Kenley Bury (Jim) of North Little Rock, AR, and son, John H. Redden (Rita) of Jackson, TN, along with Carol's daughter Emily Day Kearney (Richard) and son Stephen Day (Margaret) of Memphis. "Pa Jack" was a proud grandfather to Andy and Karli Kenley, Jourdan Redden, Aubrey, Reghan, and Owen Kearney, and Ellsie Day, and anticipated the arrival of her brother. Jack found great delight in his many nieces and nephews, including Adrian Thomas and her children, Ariel (and Sabrina), Taylor, and Addison of Memphis. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Redden Drake (d. 1981) and Eleanor Redden Cline Bathalter (d. 2012). His gentle, thoughtful manner made Jack a natural leader. Among many executive roles, he was President of his Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, the Cemetery Association of Tennessee, the Southern Cemetery Association, the Sales & Marketing Executives of Memphis, and CEO of Memorial Park. Jack also served as an elder of the Whitehaven Church of Christ and was founder of G.R.O.W. (Grief Recovery of Widowed). He was widely recognized for his expertise in the cemetery and mortuary industry, authoring many articles and a book, "The Best and the Rest of Redden's Rules of Thumb." Jack will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his family and many friends, who take comfort in the hope of one day being together again to "dwell in the house of the LORD forever." A Memorial Service will be held at noon, on Thursday, June 14, 2012, in the Family Life Center at the Goodman Oaks Church of Christ, Southaven, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Church Health Center of Memphis.
