Johnny
Gyetvay
Jun 8, 1933 — Aug 22, 2021
It is with heavy hearts, but loving memories, the family announces the passing of Johnny Gyetvay on August 22, 2021. John lived a long, productive 88 years of life as a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend.
John is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joann, his daughters, Janice McCallen, Jeanne Burnet (and close friend Rev. Dr. Jeff Wilson), Judy Chapman (Clark), three grandchildren, John Thomas (J.T.) McCallen (Carol), Kyle Chapman (Sara), and Makenzie Chapman (and fiancé Hunter Sexton), 5 great grandchildren, William Thomas (Will) McCallen, Christopher John (C.J.) McCallen, Kaitlyn Chapman, Westin Chapman and Brinley Kate Chapman, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, and his sons-in-law, Tom Burnet and Bill McCallen.
John was born on June 8, 1933 in Dante, VA. He graduated from Castlewood High School in Castlewood, VA. He served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War. He spent his career working for the federal government, the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1995 after 43 years of service.
John loved electronic model trains, and in his retirement, he turned an entire bedroom of his home into a small city of trains. It included replicas of several businesses, all carefully crafted by hand. His city included a subdivision of various houses, one of which was a replica of the house he lived in for over 45 years, all delicately handcrafted. His "train city" will be enjoyed by his great grandchildren for many years to come.
John also enjoyed cruising the world with Joann and several close friends. He has sailed around the world several times, with a couple of the cruises lasting 60 days or more. His most relaxing days were spent on a cruise ship!
A funeral service to honor John's life will be held Thursday, August 26 at Forest Hill Home and Memorial Park Midtown, 1661 Elvis Presley Blvd, Memphis, TN 38106. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM, with the service to follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Forest Hill Home and Memorial Park South, 2545 E Holmes Rd, Memphis, TN 38118 following the service. Masks are required, due to current COVID-19 protocols.
The family requests that any memorials be sent to Golden Cross Senior Ministries, 1615 Appling Rd, Cordova, TN 38016.
