Obituary

Julia Ann (Pope) Burns of Olive Branch, MS passed away on July 7, 2020 with her children by her side. Julia grew up in Mesquite, TX, and after graduating from Mesquite High School, attended Texas Women's University in Denton.  Julia, known as "Judi" in the early years of her life, moved to Memphis and met and married the love of her life, James R. "Jim" Burns, and raised two children Jeff and Christy.
Although Alzheimer's was the great "robber" of her later years, it did not define Julia. She led a very fulfilling life. Julia was an avid tennis player and coach, Cub Scouts Den Mother, she served in the TN Army National Guard, worked as an RN (Shelby State Community College Nursing), and earned a BA in Psychology from The University of Memphis (Go Tigers!). But the true joy in her life was being with family…especially her 6 grandsons and bonus grandchildren.  Julia loved animals and tolerated people.  She was known for her wit and beautiful big smile and loved a good laugh. Her physical beauty was only matched by her beauty within and love of life.

She always told the truth even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear.  Julia was genuine to a fault and a pussy cat at heart (or lion) and yet she sugar coated nothing. She left behind a hell of a lot of stuff to her daughter and son-in-law who have no idea what to do with it. So if you're looking for a 1990's VCR, 80's clothes with the tags still on them, or a wooden cheese plate with a glass dome from the 70's, give us a call.

Julia had many nicknames as she wore many hats.  She was Julia, The Tennis Lady, Hot Lips Houlihan from Mash, Mom, Mother!, Grandma and her favorite, Bummers as she was called by her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband James R. Burns, parents Norma Frances and Robert Julian Pope, and two grandsons Jacob and Jarred Burns.  She is survived by her son Jeff (Teresa) Burns of Owosso, MI; daughter Christy (Mike) Anewalt, of Olive Branch, MS;  grandchildren Christopher, Robert (Ashley), Garreth, Mikayla, CJ, Nick, and Aidan; great grandsons Wyatt and Lane; sisters Marguerite Harrison and Shirley (Buddy) Ashcraft of Texas; brother-in-law Thom Burns of Arkansas; many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
