Obituary

Laura Kathryn Arnold Burkhardt born August 16, 1923 in Sardis, MS and went to be with Jesus May 1, 2022.

At the age of 98 she (Kaye, KK, Aunt Kattie) has had a full and very interesting life. After graduating from high school in 1941 she worked as a switchboard operator for Southern Bell Telephone Company and POW camp in Como, MS. She moved to Memphis in 1946 and worked for J. R. Watkins Co as a rural order desk clerk. After marrying in December of 1949 she moved to Washington, D. C. and worked for Mudge Paper Co and John Floyd Co, being the first female ever to work the order desk. With her husband being in the Navy, she did not live very long at any one place. Left D. C. moving to San Diego, CA and then to Hawaii. From there Guam and then back to Hawaii and in 1963 back to D. C. again where she worked at Andrews Air Force Base in intelligence In 1980 she was promoted to the Pentagon as a declassification analyst for Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger. She retired in November 1983 as a GS12 and moved back to
Memphis, TN Not being ready to stop working she began a part time job and in addition was active in her church with a heart for missions until her death. She led a Bible Study on Monday nights (rain or shine) at the Shelby County Division of Corrections Center for 26 years. She received an award from Mayor Mark Luttrell for a job well done.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, David Ellis Lee and Mattie Lee Arnold and two sisters, Jean McCoy and Lucile Wilson. She is survived by one sister, Nora Baker, her "adopted family" including Allen and Cheryl Herndon and grandchildren Joshua (Crystal), Matthew (Lindsay), Sarah (William), Andrew (Taylor), Hudson (Cady) and Daniel plus 10 great grandchildren, one niece, several nephews and a host of friends.
