Leon Harvey Grove, age 95, went to be with the Lord on December 4, 2013 while residing at the TN State Veterans Home in Humboldt, TN. Born March 26, 1918, Leon served his beloved country in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946, 3rd Infantry Division, B-CO European Theatre of Operations. He was part of the WWII Allied Invasion of Riviera, "Operation Dragoon", also known as the other D-Day of France. When he returned home to Memphis, Leon continued his service to his country by active membership in the VFW Post 1965, 4935 being elected Commander numerous times. Leon received the highest honor from the Department of Veterans Affair being recognized as the Longest Serving Volunteer in America giving 63 years/5,396 hours. Leon was preceded in death by his father, Lonidas R. Grove, mother, Mollie C. Vaughn, and three sisters, Louise Grove Nelson, Emma Grove Wever, and Inez Marie Grove Reid. He is survived by his niece and caregiver, Carolyn Davis; his brother-in-law, Jim Reid; his children, Patricia Bibbs, Pam Cavanaugh (Charles), and Thomas McDaniel (Beth); five grandchildren, Marla Bibbs, Daniel Cavanaugh, Micah Cavanaugh, Jennie McKay (Will), and Jason McCalman (Michelle); and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Forest Hill Funeral Home Midtown, 1661 S. Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis, TN on Monday, December 9, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral Services and burial will be held at Forest Hill Midtown on Tuesday, December 10, at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions are welcome to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis, TN.
