Lillian T. Smith, ninety-eight, was born on October 21, 1919, in Holts Corner, TN, and passed away on February 7, 2018, at Memphis Jewish Home. She was the eldest of the ten children of Jasper Herman Trout and Elizabeth Adelle Barnes, and enjoyed growing up on the family farm. Following graduation from Forrest High School, she attended Draughon's Business College in Nashville. She worked for Travelers Insurance Company there.

While attending First Baptist Church, she caught the eye of a handsome soldier named David, who traveled from his nearby army base to date her. When he was transferred to Charleston, South Carolina, she followed and they married on June 25, 1943.

Following World War II, Lillian and David made Memphis their home, raising children and enjoying their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren over their sixty-nine-year marriage.

Lillian will be remembered for her servant's heart, sweet spirit, lilting laugh, independence, and strength. She absolutely loved going to church, whether playing the piano, singing in the choir, teaching children or attending Bible studies. Her love of music has permeated the lives of her children. She attended Richland Baptist Church for many years, but Berclair Baptist Church, most recently.

Lillian was predeceased by her parents; her husband, David; infant son, William Gary; granddaughter, Christina Goldsby; daughter-in-law, Debbie Smith (David); three brothers and two sisters. Surviving family include her children: Sarah Lim (Rudolf), David Smith, Jr., Rodney Smith (Susan), and Cheryl Goldsby (Ken). Grandchildren: Stephanie and Rachel Lim; Ashley Smith, Shea Driver (Kevin); Bryan (Dana), Daniel (Heather), and Caleb (Michal) Smith; Maggie and Callie Goldsby; Lillian (Royce) Wells, Nathalie (Brandon) Pearce; Abby (Will) Collins; Libby (Michael) Lynn; twelve great-grandchildren; three brothers and one sister. The family extends its gratitude to the wonderful people who cared for Lillian during these last few years.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. (visitation at 2 p.m.) on Sunday, February 11 at Forest Hill East.
