Loraine was born in Chatham, Ill., one of eight siblings who then moved to Marion, Ark where they all worked together as sharecroppers.
Loraine was baptized at a young age and was a faithful servant of the Lord until her death,
Loraine moved to Memphis, TN., in 1942 and worked for Drake Sandwich's.
Then she worked at Sefton Fabre Can Co., making water-proof canisters of ammunition for the war effort during this time. Also during this time, she was reacquainted with Riley Fowler, her brother's friend who had caught her eye when she was very young back in Arkansas. Two Years later Loraine and Riley were married.
Loraine and Riley bought their 1st small home in 1946. In the following years they subdivided the lot and added a larger home in 1962 on the south side. When it was finished, they moved into the larger home and rented out the smaller home.
Then they added another home on the north side, which was rented out in 1970, when it was ready to be occupied. She and Riley worked together to keep the houses rented over the many years and she continued renting the houses to the present.
Loraine was a superb seamstress and had sewed most of her own dresses and for her sons and daughter. She also altered numerous pants and dresses for herself as well as the whole family. Dad and she made at least three big patch-work bedspreads.
She and Riley worked together to keep the houses rented over the many years and she continued renting the houses to the present. Dad would cut up all the scrap material into little squares and mom would sew them all together. They mostly worked on these projects in the winter months when there was time.
Cause in all the nice months, they both worked out in the yard.
Mom and Dad always had a big garden when the children were little and they would all go out to harvest all the different vegetables each fall and prepared them for the freezer.
It was a lot of work each year, but the family had the best to eat each winter cause mom was a good cook.
When Dad was working mom would prepare his lunch each day, it was a thermos of coffee, 2 sandwiches, chips and a piece of cake.
Mom would bake a new cake each week, so Dad had a different kind of cake to take to work. Dad used to say that the men he worked with was so jealous because he ate cake each day.
She loved having a pretty flower bed around the house and a very tidy lawn. In her later years, she used a scooter to get around the yard to pick up pine cones and sticks that had fallen from all the pecan and pine trees, and other shrubs.
The neighbors would constantly she her out in the yard picking up the yard to keep it clean. One of her nice neighbors, Brian, noticed that mom would ride her scooter across the street to get her mail. He was concerned because there was a lot of commercial trucks and fast cars that drove up her street now.
He told her she needed to have her mail delivered to her door and called the Post Master at her Postal Office and arranged to have the mail delivered to the door for her so she would be safe from the traffic. After a while, there was a old recycled mail pouch hung on her den door for the postal clerk to place her daily mail.
Loraine was an avid bowler, starting when her children were little, and she continued to bowl up to early 2019. Loraine was also along time member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibility) in which she was a member over 40 years and alot of those years she maintained KOP (Keep Off Pounds).
She also was a around the world traveler, having to been on every continent on this Earth except for the North Pole, yes, she did visit the South Pole really. Her travels started when Dad and she went on a Holy Land Tour, then they took another trip to Greece and they both went on a trip to Ireland and they both kissed the Blarney Stone. They both drove all over the USA in the car visiting family and friends and other churches in Ark, Ala and MO. They developed lifelong church friends and family in those states and Mom had been able to stay in touch for these many years.
Mom did a lot of world travel with tour groups, since Riley really liked to stay home most of the time. After Riley, her husband passed in 1987, mom continued her travels all over the world and made friends where every she went.
She took about 4-5 cruises to Alaska over about a 20 year period and said she could tell the changes in the glaciers as over time they are receding and becoming smaller.
Loraine also loved going to the casinos in West Memphis and Tunica over the past many years. She could play the penny slot's all day or evening long. It was amazing to watch her. How she could play and play on just a reserved amount.
She always said that it was great hand/eye coordination exercise for her, but it just seemed that she just loved to watch the screen on the slots and how interactive they were, that kept her so amused. She so missed going to the casinos in the last year and half with her buddy, Jane.
Loraine drove until she was 99 years old, she only stopped in Aug 2019 after being the hospital for edema in her legs and the DR sent her to Kirby Pines for rehab. It was after her hospitalization, she developed a craving for cake and Ice Cream, and she had to have it every evening. Since she didn't drive anymore, there would be occasions she would run out of cake. Well of course this was not acceptable and she would ask John, her son, her caretaker, Tamekia, the plumber, Earl and her dear casino buddy, Jane to go get her some cake and extra ice cream if needed
Loraine said her secret to a long, joyous life is eating well, exercising regularly, spending time with friends and family with lots of laughter. She had the endurance, zest and vitality with which life should be lived.
