Obituary

Margarit J Scott was born on January 25, 1937 as Margarita Antonia Antoinette Jimenez, and grew up as a member of a very large family in Madrid, Spain.

It was in Madrid, Spain that she met a young  sailor, Donald "Gene" Scott. They dated for two years while Don was stationed in Spain.  They had discussed marriage, but didn't have time to finalize the paperwork before Don was assigned to NAS Memphis. Once Don was in Memphis, he started the paperwork for Margarit to join him here. They were wed in a chapel on the naval base on April 18, 1959.

When she arrived in Memphis, she knew no one here and only spoke Spanish.  She was soon introduced to Don's large family, who became her own family, and learned to speak English by watching tv.

Margarit was a very successful business woman. One of her first jobs in the US was counting coins from vending machines. She was an executive for approximately 30 years with Maybelline Cosmetics / Schering Plough,  traveling internationally for much of her time there. She retired from employment in 1993, but by no means stopped working. She volunteered as a Spanish translator at St. Jude Children's Hospital, something she found most rewarding, but also most heartbreaking as she fell in love with the children and their families she worked with. Anyone that knew Margarit also knew her love of dogs. She also volunteered with the Memphis Humane Society for many years.

Margarit and Don loved to travel, and took family on some of their favorite trips. After retirement they traveled to Europe, Alaska and Canada. They were married for 61 years.

Margarit was preceded in death by her parents as well as her loving husband, Don.  Of her US family,  she was preceded in death by
sisters-in-law ; Elizabeth Chandler, Margie Akins, and Jeanette "Ted" Archer; brothers-in-law Johnnie James "Peck" Scott, Howard Edison "Bill" Scott and Samuel William Scott; nephews Danny Archer and Mike Chandler.  She is survived by her brother-in-law, Tony Scott (Glenda) of Hernando, MS and sister-in-law Diane Cogburn of Sanford, FL, niece Barbara Nabors, nephew Jimmy Chandler (Anita), niece Danni Long (Hugh), and nephew Dwain Scott (Shannon).  She was affectionately known by Aunt Margarit by a host of additional nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or The Memphis Humane Society.
