Marvin Mark Richardson, Jr., 85, passed away Thursday, July 23rd. Marvin experienced ill health as a child with resulting handicaps. But nothing slowed Marvin down. Marvin had been a Boy Scout and then a volunteer with the Scouts. Although his handicaps kept him from earning the coveted Eagle Scout award he received about every other award. Scouting was his life. Marvin was a mail clerk with the US Postal Service until he retired. He loved his Lord and had been a lifetime active member of Union Avenue United Methodist Church until its closing when he transferred his membership to St. Lukes United Methodist Church. Marvin was also an accomplished folk artist with a full page feature story in the Commercial Appeal. A quote from that article dated September 21, 2003 said, "The words of the Boy Scout Law - A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent - find expression over and over in Richardson''s paintings." Marvin not only painted these words but lived them everyday of his life. He never knew a stranger. Marvin was preceded in death by his sister Marianne Levey and leaves behind many who love him including a nephew, Ben Levey from Baltimore, MD and Ben''s wife Cheryl and 2 great nieces; his cousin Barbara Morris and her children Janet Sedano of Fresno, CA; Donald Morris of Memphis and Laura Truitt of Germantown and cousins Don and Linda Yarbrough of Oklahoma City, OK. Visitation is planned for Wednesday evening between 5 - 7 p.m., July 29th at St. Lukes United Methodist Church on Highland with services the following morning Thursday July 30th at 11 a.m. at St. Lukes United Methodist Church. Flowers can be sent to Forest Hill Funeral Home on Elvis Presley and memorials to St. Lukes Methodist or Boy Scout Troop 40 by contacting Melissa Galloway at St. Lukes UMC.
