Mary Irene Cavallo Babich, 92, of Hernando, MS silently slipped away on January 5, 2014. Mary was born on August 24, 1921 in Clarksdale, MS to James and Rosa Cavallo. Her husband, Nicholas Babich preceded her in death in February 2013. They were married for 62 years. Nick and Mary met during World War II at the Catholic Club in Memphis, TN and married a few years later. During the war, like many of the women at the time, Mary was employed by Fischer Lime and Cement Co. in Memphis where she made airplane parts. After the war, they moved to Chicago; several years later, they returned to Memphis. Mary was a long-time member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Memphis where she was very active in her younger years. At the time of her passing, Mary was also a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Hernando, MS. She was an avid gardener and wonderful cook. Mary, naturally, was a caregiver who always took care of all of her family members for extended periods of time. She was always a delight who was sweet, nurturing, kind, and loving. Mary has left a great void in the many hearts she touched.
Mary had four siblings who preceded her in death, her three brothers: Sylvo, Angelo, and Anthony Cavallo; and her sister, Viola Shelley. Mary leaves behind her two sons, Michael Babich (Elizabeth) and Anthony Babich of Hernando, MS; her two grandsons, John Babich of Millington, TN and Michael Babich of Memphis, TN; two step-sons, Joseph Crossman of Memphis and James Crossman of Horn Lake, MS; three-great grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving sister, Margaret Wilder of Hernando, MS; her sister-in-law, Louise Cavallo of Memphis, TN and many nieces and nephews, ALL who will miss her dearly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Hernando, MS. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will be in the mausoleum in Calvary Cemetery.
