IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maureen Elizabeth
Flake
October 16, 1948 – August 21, 2025
Maureen Elizabeth Flake (Furniss), age 76, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, in Somerville, Tennessee, after a courageous battle with a chronic illness. Born on October 16, 1948, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Maureen lived a life rich in love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to her family. A proud breast cancer survivor, she faced every challenge in life with quiet strength, grace, and determination.
Maureen was the beloved wife of Billy Flake and the cherished mother of Scott Bonds, Kody Flake, and Kyle Flake. She lovingly welcomed her wonderful stepchildren Terrie Simmons, Billie Jo Flake, and Shelly Dambrowski into the family, as well as her daughters-in-law, Rachel (Kody) Flake and Heather (Kyle) Roberts, and loved them all as her own. Her deep bond with her sisters Deborah (Tony) Birdsong, Rebecca (Mike) Davis, and Kathy Pyle was a continual source of strength and great joy throughout her life. Maureen also adored her role as Grandma — lovingly devoted to her many grandchildren, who brought light, laughter, and purpose to her every day.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lorrette Drephal; her father, Bready Furniss Jr.; her stepmother, Jean Furniss; and her stepbrother, Alan Williams.
To those who knew her best, Maureen was the heart of the family. Her home was a sanctuary where holidays sparkled with warmth, birthdays were celebrated with gusto, and even ordinary weekends became cherished memories. She had a gift for turning everyday moments into something special, and her home was always filled with laughter.
She was known by many names — including one particularly memorable nickname that's probably best left off the record — but to those who loved her, she was simply the heart of the family. Her presence brought comfort and joy to all who gathered around her table or simply shared time in her company.
May her memory be a blessing, and may it bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
