Meryl C. Broussard, Sr., passed away peacefully on June 13, 2016, in Memphis, TN. Born on December 7, 1925 in Edgard, LA to Charles and Julia (Babin) Broussard. It was there in elementary school where he first met his wife of 67 years, Alice Ann (Poirrier) Broussard. In his passing besides his wife, he also leaves his seven children: Meryl(Flor) Broussard, Jr., of Vienna, VA; Charles Broussard, Of Cincinnati, OH; Paula(Jim) Mohead of Dyersburg, TN; Mary Lynn(Carey) Huguet, of New Orleans, LA; Kim(Bill) Bevis of Knoxville, TN; Lisa(Pat) Ryan of Lawrence, KS; Tina(John) O'Brien of Memphis, TN. He also leaves twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; his brother Marion Broussard of LaPlace, LA and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Joyce Harville of Baton Rouge, LA and his brother Rev. Hubert Broussard of Houma, LA. On his 16th birthday Pearl Harbor was bombed, World War II began. After graduating from Edgard High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. After his basic training in San Diego he was sent to the South Pacific War Zone where he joined the famed Second Marine Division on the Northern Marine Division on the Northern Mariana Islands of Tinian (Enola Gay Fame), and then Saipan. He was then part of the invasion of Okinawa in 1945 and the occupation of Nagasaki, Japan after the 2nd Atomic Bomb. Returning from active duty he graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rough, LA in 1949. A year later he began working for Esso (Exxon) Oil Company in new Orleans, LA in New Orleans, LA and in 1966 he was transferred to Memphis, TN. He retired in 1983. Throughout his lifetime he volunteered and served in leadership roles as a Scoutmaster in New Orleans, in the PTA at Bishop Bryne High School, Parish Council at Saint Paul Catholic Church and Exxon Annuitant Club of Memphis. He also delivered Meals on Wheels (MIFA) for 25 years in Memphis, TN. He enjoyed traveling, singing in his LSU and Church choirs, and writing his memoirs. Friends and family will be received at Saint Paul Catholic Church, 1425 E. Shelby Drive, Memphis, TN 38116 on Monday, June 20, 2016 from 9 am until the time of Mass at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Forest Hill South Cemetery, in the Old Rugged Cross section, 2545 E. Holmes Road, Memphis, TN 38118. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be sent to MIFA(Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association) 910 Vance Avenue, Memphis, TN 38126 or Saint Paul Catholic Church, 1425 E. Shelby Dr., Memphis, TN 38116.
