Obituary

On December 2, 2022, Olene R Van Krevelen came to the end of her earthly journey at her home in Brandon, MS. She was 88 years old. She was born in Carthage, Mississippi to Mary McCann Roberts and George W. Roberts on February 11, 1934. She married the father of her children, Charlie Goodnight, at the age of 14. After their children were school age, she enrolled in business school. She mastered shorthand, typing and bookkeeping. These skills allowed her to become independent and pursue a career.

On June 12. 1965. She married Les Turberville who introduced her to a life she had only read about. He encouraged her to reach higher. Since she had only received her GED, Les encouraged her to enter Memphis State University. It took a few years of night classes, but she received her degree with honors. In the mid-60s she began working as Secretary to the Dean at the University of Tennessee College of Nursing. When she retired in 1994, she was an Assistant Dean for Business Affairs.

She was an avid golfer and bridge player, later in life she loved Canasta. She became a member of a local investment club and loved the market. She invested her resources, but she also invested in her children and grandchildren. This fact is apparent by the heights to which her grandchildren have risen. She, especially, encouraged her granddaughters to be independent and to AIM HIGH. Many other young women have spoken of how she mentored and promoted them, as well.

She is survived by her son, Tim (Tena) Goodnight, Sr. of Omaha, NE; daughters, Debi (Don) Leathers of Flowood, MS, and Charlene (Richard) Hurtt of Brandon, MS. Along with nine grandchildren, Rebecca Sims of Tampa FL, Janeen (Frank) Wisnieski of Charlotteville, VA, Kristi (Dave) Brown of Pass Christian, MS, Tiffany (Ryan) Wade of Omaha, NE, Tim (April) Goodnight, Jr. of Nenzel, NE, James (Kristy) Garrett of Pearl. MS, Wes (Hanna) Garrett of Brandon, MS, Jonathan (Meg) Garrett of Pearl, MS, Dustin Leathers of Atlanta, GA, Preston (Kala) Leathers of Brandon, MS, Misty (Josh) Guy, Rachel Hurtt and Emily Hurtt of the Jackson, MS area. She is also survived by 22 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and George Roberts, her sister, Rachel Duran, her brother T. Mack Roberts and an infant granddaughter, Raquelle Goodnight. Her husbands, Lester G. Turberville and Thomas O. Van Krevelen, also predeceased her.

The family will hold a private graveside service at Forest Hill East, Memphis, Tennessee on December 12,
