OPAL G. JOHNSTON, formerly of Memphis, Tennessee, and Cleveland, Mississippi, died on December 8, 2012, at a nursing home in Jefferson City, Tennessee. She was born on September 28, 1915, near Blue Mountain, Tippah County, Mississippi. Her parents were Arlis Young Griffin and Minnie Delma Hardy Griffin, now long since deceased. In 1934, she married Arthur S. "Johnnie" Johnston, Jr., at Marion, Arkansas. She and he lived in Memphis for many years where he was an operator for Memphis Street Railway and she worked at Union Planters Bank. They have three children: Peggy J. Cook and her husband, Gene, now of Gainesville, Virginia; Robert G. Johnston and his wife, Bettye, of Cleveland, Mississippi; and Faye J. Fillers and her husband, Jerry, of Knoxville, Tennessee. She is survived by nine grandchildren, Robin R. Street, Randall A. Ross, Russell J. Ross, P. Ryan Ross, Arthur S. Johnston, III, Amy Nell Johnston Traver, Arliston O. Hall, Ronald Bartlett Osborne, and Lindsey O. Stinnett, and 17 great-grandchildren. Services will be at Forest Hill South Funeral Home, 2445 East Holmes Rd., Memphis, TN 38118 at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, December 10 at the funeral home.
