Peggy Jane
Sharp
Mar 6, 1937 — Jun 26, 2023
Peggy Jane Sharp passed away June 26th, 2023 in Memphis, Tennessee.
Peggy was born March 6th, 1937, in Dickson, Tennessee, the cherished only child of Paul and Elizabeth Street. Her early childhood memories were of time spent among doting aunts, uncles, and cousins on her family's farm. When her parents moved to Trezevant, Tennessee, Peggy made fast friends with neighbors and classmates due to her evident wit and charm. As an honors student at Trezevant High School, she was Pep Club President, Editor of the Annual, and a standout talent on the girls' basketball team, proudly earning the nickname "Racehorse" for both her agility on the court and her shapely legs. Peggy was voted "Most Intelligent" in the Who's Who of her senior class and went on to be selected as an American Legion Auxiliary Girls' State Representative and to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award. She served as Football Royalty on the Homecoming Court alongside her high school sweetheart, Willie Hickerson, with whom she would go on to marry, move to Memphis, and raise five children.
In 1962, Peggy began her career at General Electric where she worked in the Memphis Lamp Plant for nearly forty years. It was here she made countless lifetime friendships, was recognized with a "10 Billionth Lamp" award, and met her second love, Bob Sharp.
Peggy was an active member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church and especially enjoyed time spent within the close knit women's group there. Peggy was a longtime follower and enthusiastic fan of Memphis Tigers Basketball. She was an avid reader and daily crossword solver. She loved admiring nature, especially the hummingbirds her garden attracted. An excellent cook, she enjoyed preparing meals for friends and family, and she created a home to all who gathered under her roof. A gracious and irreplaceable matriarch, Peggy's generosity of spirit and fairness of heart will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her five children, Shawn (John), Kim (Ed), Darryl (Ana), Keryn, and Lori (Kyle); her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Rocky), Patrick, Nicholas (Jessy), Jenna (Kevin), Gianni (Becka), and Micah; and her great-grandchildren, Max, Carmen, Violet, Chloe, Kellan, Shepard, Jordy, and Daisy.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Willie, and second husband, Bob.
Due to the gravity of their loss, her family has chosen a small graveside service and ask that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Methodist Hospice Residence, LeBonheur Children's Hospital, and the Humane Society of Memphis.
