Robert Daniel "Dan" Currie, Sr., age 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 13, 2019, at St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett, Tennessee. The son of Robert Arthur "Jack" Currie and Linnye T. (Bowen) Currie, Dan was born in Memphis on March 30, 1929. After graduating from Humes High School, he served in the United States Navy Reserves for 12 years as an instructor with the Seabees. Dan was employed as a draftsman with Fisher Steel, then worked as a building inspector for Shelby County. Dan recently celebrated 59 years of marriage with his wife, Judy C. Currie. The couple met at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, where he was a patient and sh e was a student nurse assigned to his care. They eloped and were married in Marion, Arkansas. A Christian who loved to sing, Dan often sang in the choir at his church home. During his lifetime, he attended services at Seventh Street Baptist Church, Broadway Baptist Church, Boulevard Baptist Church, Maple Grove Baptist Church, and Moore Haven Baptist Church. He served in the Gideon Ministry. Dan's other interests included roller skating, bowling, and traveling. Following his retirement, he and wife, Judy, spent their golden years in Florida, where he served as the volunteer choir director for Maple Grove Baptist Church, and volunteered with Glades County Search and Rescue. The pair eventually returned to his hometown of Memphis to be near family. Left behind to cherish his memory are wife Judy; sister, Jeannette Woodward; son, Robert Currie Jr. and his wife Sandy; son, Dennis Currie and his wife Karen; daughter, Lynn Murff and her husband Scott; eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, three nieces and extended family. Services will be held Tuesday, June 18 at 10:00 am at Forest Hill East, with internment at Forest Hill South. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local home church to honor Dan's memory.
