Obituary

Robert Nelson Hewlett, a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, just days after celebrating his 89th birthday.

Robert made his 89th birthday memorable by doing two of the things he enjoyed most: sharing lunch with family and friends at a Mexican restaurant and taking a trip to the casino with his sister, Gale. True to Robert’s spirit, he managed to win back all the money he had lost before he left!

Born August 17, 1937, Robert was the eighth of eleven children born to Agnes and Thomas Hewlett. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy and spent approximately two years stationed off the coast of Spain. He was later granted a hardship discharge so that he could return home to care for his two young sons, Bobby and David, from his previous marriage.

In 1960, Robert began what would become a distinguished 26-year career with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. It was there that he met Sheila, who had two children from her previous marriage, Terri and Joey. Robert and Sheila married in 1966 and built a loving family together, welcoming their daughter, Lori, in 1972. They shared 43 years of marriage until Sheila's passing in 2010.

Robert quickly advanced from the Civil Division to the Criminal Division, where he rose through the ranks from Patrolman to Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain. His family was especially proud when he graduated from the FBI Academy in Washington, D.C. He served the Sheriff's Department with dedication and pride for 26 years, retiring in 1986 as Assistant Chief Deputy over the Fugitive Squad.

Retirement did not mean slowing down for Robert. He spent another ten years as Head of Security at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center before retiring once again. He then combined his work ethic with one of his favorite pastimes—fishing—when he purchased and operated a bait and tackle shop for several years.

Robert was a hardworking, honest, and dependable man who took great pride in providing for and caring for his family. He loved fishing, spending time with family and friends, and making memories with the people closest to him. Those who knew him will remember not only his strong character and dedication, but also his ability to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Robert is survived by his children, Terri Donaldson (Paul), Lori Dwyer (Jeff), Robert Hewlett, Jr., and Joe Chastain, Jr.; his brother, Frank Hewlett; and his sisters, Carolyn Love and Gale Hewlett. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his son, David Hewlett, and his beloved wife, Sheila.

Robert deeply loved his family, and that love was returned many times over. His life was one of service, hard work, devotion, and family.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
