Robert Michael "Mike" Shelby, 66, of Covington and formerly of Memphis died Saturday, December 5, 2015 surrounded by family after a battle with cancer.

He graduated from Central High School and attended the University of Memphis. He served in the in the US Army in the 519th Military Intelligence Battalion and received the Bronze Star. He was a member of DAV.

He worked 40 years with the Shelby County Sheriff''s Office and obtained the rank of Lieutenant, was a member of the Unified Personnel Policy Committee, a longtime officer of the Shelby County Deputy Sheriff''s Association and a past Trustee for the AFL/CIO.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Henderson Shelby, his childrenÍ Matthew Michael Wayne Shelby, Jennifer Elaine Rush, Heather Elaine Murphy, and two grandsonsÍ Daniel Shelby Jackson and Christopher Michael Jackson. Also surviving are his brothers and sistersÍ Lawrence Shelby, Mary Ann Nix, Carolyn Ratz, Grovennia Shepard, Lucy Caha, Grover Harry Whittle, Theresa Perez, Roger Whittle, Andrew
Whittle, James Whittle and Timothy Whittle.

He loved to travel, was an avid golfer, train enthusiast and stamp collector. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans. Visitation will start at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 10 with the funeral at 11 a.m. at Forrest Hill Funeral Home, 2440 Whitten Rd., Memphis, TN.
