Born in Mason, Tn November 24, 1935 in a sharecropper's cabin behind the big house of Lewis Sherrill, her great-grandfather. Lived in Mason and attended elementary and high school there. Upon graduation from high school in 1953, she went to work in downtown Memphis at an insurance agency located in the UP Bank Building.
She started work at Buckeye Cotton Oil on Chelsea Avenue in 1954, left in early 1957 before Mike was born. She then transferred to Buckeye Cellulose Specialties Division in August of 1958, where she worked until her retirement in December of 1998.
One of her proudest achievements is that at the age of 40, she attended college (night school) from 1975- 1983 at Memphis State University and earned the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Cum Laude.
Her activities and hobbies revolved around art and church. She was a gifted painter and created many beautiful ceramic pieces; many of her friends and family proudly display her creations in their homes. She was actively involved in the Emmaus Walk ministry, and served alongside her husband, Bill, in the Kairos Prison Ministry. Her positions at the church included Treasurer, Elder, and Group Leader in Christian Women's Fellowship. These things gave her great joy. And she had the spiritual gift of giving - there are countless people whose lives were touched not only with her care, but also through monetary support. She saw a need and acted on it by doing her part to meet that need.
She married Bill Bartlett later in life, and the adventures began! It was wonderful watching her joy as they loved each other, traveled the world, and served the Lord together side-by-side.
She was a beautiful lady, inside and out. Her family was very important to her. The first Sunday in May each year is Homecoming at Belmont Church, and by all the family's calculations, this year was the first one she missed, She lived with pain as an unwelcome guest for many years, but did not let it stop her from important family and church functions. She was so strong and an inspiration to us all. They don't make them like that generation anymore. And speaking of Homecoming - Ruth was ready to go home. Now she is with her Savior and loved ones, and she is no longer crippled and bent with scoliosis.
Philippians 3:20-21 "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body."
