Samuel Payton Weaver, 89, passed away at his home in Bartlett, TN, on July 14, 2012. He was born in Lauderdale County, TN. As the son of a Methodist minister, he lived all over west Tennessee and western Kentucky. Mr. Weaver graduated from Martin High School. He then joined the Navy, and went on to serve on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hoggatt Bay during World War II as an AOM2. He was a gunner on the TBM aircraft in Squadron VC 14. After his service, he attended Bethel College. Mr. Weaver met Betty Mae Buchanan when he coached her high school basketball team. They married on September 26, 1948. Upon moving to Memphis in 1952, he worked at Lehon Roofing, then for the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired as a Special Delivery postman in 1984. He attended the Oliver Creek Church of Christ. Mr. Weaver enjoyed fishing, watching any kind of sports, and keeping up with his shipmates from WWII. He and Betty traveled all over the United States to attend 19 ship reunions over the years. Mr. Weaver is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Mae Weaver; daughters, Connie Henry (Chuck) of Memphis, TN, Patricia Buxton (Jerry) of Bartlett, TN and Beth Pescue (Andy) also of Bartlett; eight grandchildren, with much love and precious memories, and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Bobby Weaver of Jackson, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. H.D. and Beulah Walpool Weaver and a brother, Bill Weaver. Visitation will be 12-2 P.M., Monday, July 16, 2012 at Forest Hill East Funeral Home with services to follow at 2 P.M. Interment will be in Forest Hill East Cemetery.
