Vernon Hartful McGowan, Jr. was born November 22, 1928 in Bay, AR. He departed this life September 2, 2023. He was 95 years old. He was the son of a farmer. He attended Shady Grove School, Truman, AR.

He married Margie Elaine Mixon February 22, 1947. In 1950 he moved his family to Memphis, TN. In 1953 he joined the City of Memphis Fire Department. He soon earned the nickname "Mac". He retired from the fire department in 1982 after 27 years of service. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant. He had many professions. Trim carpenter, home builder, truck driver and preacher. Vernon's passion was preaching at Calvary Rescue Mission. In 2020, he was presented a plaque for 36 years of service.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Margie Elaine Mixon McGowan.

He is survived by his sons, Robert Earl McGowan and wife Virginia (Jinny). Michael Ray McGowan and wife DeLois (Lois). His daughter, Mary Lawanda McGowan Reynolds and Partner James E. Borden. His grandchildren, Jeffrey Michael McGowan and wife Rachel. Teresa Lynn McGowan Field and husband Tracy. Joel Michael McGowan and wife Shelly. Alisha Marie Reynolds Peden and husband Donnie. Adam David Reynolds and wife Candace. Great Grandchildren, Dalton McGowan, Josh Duncan, Savannah McGowan, Jennah McGowan, Kadyn McGowan, Cayson Reynolds, Annaleigh Reynolds, Adalynn Reynolds. Great Great Granddaughter, Finley McGowan.
