Obituary

Violet Cordelia Wachter Castle, 97, transitioned peacefully to her new Heavenly home on September 29, 2023 at 11:45am with her devoted son and granddaughter by her side.

She lived life to the fullest. Don't call her Miss Violet, because she didn't miss a thing. She was always ready to get up and go. She loved to travel and was able to do a great deal of it with her family and NAWIC friends. She loved reading as evidenced by her vast book collection. She has Reader's Digest magazines dating back to the 1950s. She loved the outdoors. She loved fishing; especially at Lake Ouachita. She held many wonderful memories of weekends spent there with Bill and his brothers.

She was a crochet master; completing some of the most difficult patterns with ease. She often sent afghans to loved ones for special occasions. There is love in every stitch. She loved to teach others. Her pecan pies were a culinary delight and requested at every family function.

National Association of Women in Construction was her lifelong passion. NAWIC, for short, allowed her to make friends all across the country. She joined on April 1, 1968.

She held every possible position in her local Memphis Chapter and on the board. She was always willing to be of service. She received WIC of the year multiple times and in 2019 received the Lifetime Achievement award. Her influence and reach were far and wide. She is a legend.

She loved her time being on television while answering phones for Crimestoppers. She used to tell us about her conversations with Joey Sulipeck and his ties.

In her early years she went to Delta State Teacher's College. She never went into the teaching profession. She learned secretarial skills. She was a great organizer.

Wallace Electric was her workplace for many years. She was Office Manager and bookkeeper when she retired.

She knew how to get things done. Just ask the President of Blue Bell. When they didn't stock her favorite brand of ice cream in her local store she went all the way to the top. She was very persuasive. She not only had the local store call her when "her" ice cream came in but they set back 2 cartons for her. The first 3 were free, of course, for all her inconvenience.

Many of you may have seen her Letters to the Editor in the Commercial Appeal. She often wrote regarding current events, especially if it involved basketball. Oh how she loved the Memphis Tigers. She didn't miss a game if she could help it.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry Wachter and Ethel Nicholson, and a brother, Henry "Bud" Wachter, and long time companion, William "Bill" Vandermeer.

She is survived by her devoted son, Frank Castle and granddaughter, Kim Castle, both of Southaven, sister, Marie Alexander of Pearl, MS, and sister, Margaret (Dan) Benke of South Carolina, many beloved nieces and nephews, treasured great nieces and nephews and one great-great nephew.

The family requests memorials should be sent to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital
