Wanda Sue Smith, (86), passed from this Earth, surrounded by family, into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 20, 2017. "Mama Sue", as she was so affectionately known, was born on January 17, 1931 to Earnest and Doyle Keenum in Calhoun City, MS, and attended Calhoun City Public Schools. She later met and married Stanley L. Smith, Sr., moved to Memphis and started a family. Mama Sue enjoyed playing tennis, square dancing and was an avid slalom skier at the family lake house at Pickwick. Some of her greatest joys came from the lake house where she would entertain friends and guests for weekends that were filled with pranks, games and long pontoon boat rides. She was an awesome mom to three boys and worked tirelessly transporting them to numerous ball practices, games and scouting events. Her second greatest joy was the times she spent with her grandkids and great grandkids. Those times included long "Palmolive" bubble baths in her heart shaped hot tub, as well as playing pranks, games, and lovingly frightening her loved ones with various scary masks. She loved playing pranks and practical jokes with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Willie Ray and Faye Keenum, sister Beulah Sims, husband Stanley L. Smith, Sr., and her eldest son, Dr. Stanley L. Smith, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Steve Smith of Pickwick, TN, Stuart Smith of Germantown, TN, and Linda Smith (widow of Dr. Stanley L. Smith, Jr.), 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, a nephew, Danny Ray Keenum and a niece, Ann Spencer.
The family would like to thank Mama Sue''s extended family, Signature HealthCARE and Covenant Hospice for taking such great care of her needs and for loving her. The kindness and love that they poured out to their "Wanda Sue" brought her great joy and was greatly appreciated. They always had hugs, kisses and laughter for her, but most importantly, chocolate bars and Coke.
An intimate graveside service will be held at Forest Hill Funeral Home on Whitten Road, Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 10:00am.
